DESCRIPTION:VOYAGER LECTURE SERIES\nSouthern Utah History Through Picture and Word\nWith Lyman Hafen and Roland Lee\nTuesday\, February 25\, 7:30pm\nSocial Hour begins at 6:30pm\nThe Lorraine Boccardo Theater\nThis year’s Voyager Lecture Series follows “The History of This Land\,” from the deep time studied in geology\, through modern concerns related to our changing environment. \nFor February’s lecture\, hear from writer Lyman Hafen and artist Roland Lee as they explore the history of Southern Utah through art and literature. \nLyman Hafen and his wife Debbie are natives of St. George\, Utah. Lyman graduated from Dixie College where he discovered a love for learning and literature and came to terms with the idea that he would spend his life telling the compelling stories of this place to the world. After completing his education at Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in communications\, he co-founded St. George Magazine in 1983\, and was its editor for 16 years. He continues to write a bi-monthly column chronicling the history\, culture and personality of his fast-changing hometown. He has written twelve books of fiction and nonfiction\, and his writing has been honored on several occasions by the Utah Arts Council. Lyman is host of the NOT FORGOTTEN podcast sharing the legacy of stories of southern Utah. He recently retired after serving 25 years as executive director of Zion Natural History Association (now the Zion Forever Project) in Zion National Park. \nRoland Lee and his wife Nellie have lived in St. George for over 50 years. Roland’s interest in pioneer history has led him to do a series of watercolor paintings of early southern Utah as well as following the pioneer trail of his own ancestors. His historical paintings have appeared on the covers of The Ensign magazine and Pioneer magazine\, published by the Sons of Utah Pioneers. With paintings in over 2000 public and private collections\, Roland has been honored with the Governor’s Mansion Medal and a 40-year retrospective of his work at the Sears Museum. Over the past 40 years he has teamed up with writer Lyman Hafen on many books and publications. At the Voyager lecture Lyman will share his writings and Roland will show slides of his historical paintings while together sharing their appreciation for those who came before us. \n  \nTICKETS

Dr. Johnson’s research is broadly based in sedimentary basin analysis\, including contributions to understanding the tectonic evolution of Asia\, global perspectives on basin and energy systems modeling\, and subsurface reservoir characterization and prediction. More recent work has centered on anthropogenic sedimentary systems such as Lake Powell reservoir sediment and deltas\, as well as energy transitions including carbon management and sedimentary geothermal resources. \nDr. Johnson is a Geological Society of America Fellow\, and the 2021 recipient of the Dickinson Medal from the Society for Sedimentary Geology. Baldwin\, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology\, Jena Germany\, and the DI Ranch\, Motoqua\, UT\nTuesday\, May 28\, 2024 // 7:30pm\nOptional Social Hour With Like-Minded Friends\, Light Snacks And Beverages @ 6:30pm\nThe Lorraine Boccardo Theater\nHave you wondered why plants produce so many of the drugs that humans use and abuse (nicotine\, cocaine\, opium\, THC\, aspirin\, etc.)? \nThese “why” questions have been addressed in studies that lack scientific rigor\, being little more than modern versions of Rudyard Kipling’s “just-so-stories” (How leopards got their spots…).   Thanks to the long-term patient funding of the Max Planck Society in Germany\, Ian T. Baldwin and his students have developed a fire-chasing native tobacco plant\, Nicotiana attenuata\, which grows in Kayenta’s botanical ‘hood\, into a model for the rigorous scientific study of these “drug-related why questions”. For the past three decades\, we have been silencing the genes in this plant that are responsible for the plant’s amazingly diverse chemistry (it makes more than 20\,000 unique compounds) and conducting experiments at the Lytle and DI Ranches in the Beaver Dam wash to provide answers to these “drug-related why questions”. \nThis talk will provide many examples of the sophistication with which this plant uses its chemistry to solve ecological problems. The solutions that this plant has evolved matches the creativity of the human imagination. These science-grounded examples of the creativity of natural selection underscore why nature preserves\, such as those at the Lytle and DI Ranches\, are invaluable laboratories for the study of gene function. \nTickets $20

She continues to serve as an adjunct professor at The College for Financial Planning (CFFP) where in 2018 she developed the Chartered SRI Counselor™ (CSRIC™) designation program in partnership with The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF)\, as the first professional financial designation education program in the United States exclusively devoted to sustainable investing. \nIn 2023\, she was named one of Investment News’ 40 Under 40 honorees for her work in teaching financial advisors fundamentals in sustainable investing\, was named CFFP’s 2022 Faculty of the Year\, and was a finalist for the 2019 SRI Service Award – one of the most prestigious awards in the sustainable investing space. She has given two TED talks on the topic of sustainable and responsible investing: “Investing for a Better World: Using Wall Street to Implement Social Change” (November 2015 at TEDx Jersey City)\, and “Stopping the Rebuttal: Millennial Investors and the Future of Sustainability” (April 2018 at TEDx Clarkson University). He has spent 40 field seasons in Antarctica conducting research on life under\nice-shelves\, the Southern Ocean\, sea ice\, permanently ice-covered lakes\, life beneath the two-\nmile-thick Antarctic ice sheet\, and climate change. His work also focuses on Himalayan glaciers\nand the study of life on icy worlds beyond Earth putting him in Tibet\, Alaska\, and Greenland as\nan investigator on various Chinese and NASA projects. He chaired the Scientific Committee on\nAntarctic Research international subglacial group of experts and led the first winter expeditions\nto study ecosystems in the Transantarctic Mountains during the polar night. \nProfessor Priscu is a Fellow of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography\,\nAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science\, and the American Geophysical Union\, is\na German Humboldt Scholar\, and has received numerous awards for his research\, including the\nGoldwaithe Medal in Glaciology for his work on polar ice sheets\, the International Medal for\nScientific Excellence from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research\, and the E.O. Wilson\nBiodiversity Award for his work on polar microbial diversity. An Antarctic stream and valley\, and\ntwo cold-loving microorganisms have been named after him. And when did all those characteristically birdy features first evolve? The evolutionary origins of birds\, and the way that birds were “built” over the course of almost 100 million years\, may surprise you! \nDr. Jerry Harris was born at a very early age in Chicago\, Illinois. Shortly thereafter\, he became enamored with dinosaurs\, and his continued fascination with them proves that he’s never quite grown up completely. With a few hiccups along the way\, and by continually moving across the country\, he has earned B.A.\, M.S.\, and Ph.D. degrees in the geosciences\, focusing on vertebrate paleontology. That event started a passion for birding that has followed him throughout his life. While a native of Utah\, he lived in Oregon for 22 years\, where he helped grow the Friends of the Refuge for the newly founded Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge\, serving as both a Board member and Vice President for several years. \nPaul and his family recently moved to St. George\, Utah where he was surprised at the wildlife diversity of the area. When the small Red Cliffs Audubon chapter was on the verge of shutting down\, Paul agreed to take over so the birds and wildlife in this area didn’t lose their voice and served as president for 5 years. A manufacturing engineer by profession\, Paul loves being outdoors whether hiking\, backpacking\, canyoneering\, or leading birding field trips for the Audubon. DESCRIPTION:LECTURES & IDEAS / THEATER\nChautauqua: Living History\nVoices From World War II\nFriday & Saturday\, September 29-30\, 2023 // 7:30pm\nThe Lorraine Boccardo Theater\nTheater\, History\, and Storytelling: Chautauqua is an oral storytelling tradition that brings history to life through interactive theater and compelling discussion aimed at stimulating critical thinking and increasing appreciation for complex histories. \nThis year\, we present Voices from World War II\, starring General George Patton\, favorite leader of the European troops (but often not politically correct) and Ernie Pyle\, famous war correspondent who reported from the troops in the trenches. \nErnie Pyle will be presented by scholar Doug Mishler. Doug Mishler is an independent scholar who has taught at the University of Nevada and Western Washington University. He is the author of a history of the Ringling Brothers Circus and has consulted on several public television and Chautauqua programs\, regularly appearing in Maryland and Colorado. He has studied and presented as P. T. Barnum\, Theodore Roosevelt\, William Lloyd Garrison\, Henry Ford\, Jefferson Davis\, George Wallace\, Upton Sinclair\, and Major General Robert Ross. In addition to Ernie Pyle\, he also portrays Billy Sunday\, William Clark\, Andrew Carnegie\, Edward R. Murrow\, Thomas Hart Benton\, and Nikita Khrushchev. Mishler has a Ph.D. in American cultural history from the University of Nevada\, Reno. \nErnie Pyle was an in-the-trenches correspondent who reported on the actual conditions and trials of the GI’s living under terrible conditions as opposed to the uplifting propaganda put out by the government. \nGeneral George Patton will be presented by Tim Beasely. General Patton was a swash-buckling leader on the European Front and was known for his personal regard for the troops under his command. He was always seen with high top black boots\, an infantry helmet and two silver pistols strapped to his hips. He had the capability of surpassing General Eisenhower in the European command but because of his offensive political rhetoric\, he was ultimately relegated to lower posts and finally died in a car crash at the end of the war. \nTim Beasley\, from Norfolk VA\,  has performed for over 30 years as an authentic and truly accurate General Patton\, speaking for many formal military bases and patriotic events. His very believable impersonation of “Old Blood and Guts” as a motivational speaking special guest is a highly recognized leadership icon\, combining powerful positive thinking with American pride. \nEach speaker will present a speech “in character\,” followed by an “in character” lively discussion with the audience. Our speakers during the 2023/2024 season will share insights and expertise about the future of health\, wellness\, finance\, and much more. \nIn September\, Dr. Ginamarie Foglia will share current insights from science\, medicine\, public health & exercise physiology to inform your future choices for living well and thriving. \nDr. Ginamarie Foglia\, DO\, MPH\, FACP has over 27 years of healthcare experience as an internationally known subject matter expert in infectious disease\, internal medicine\, public health\, clinical trial research and development and medical education. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. Dr. Foglia serves as a Senior Advisor\, Subject Matter Expert & Strategist for Vaccines/Biologics\, Shabas Solutions\, supporting the U.S. Health & Human Services (HHS)\, Biomedical Advanced Research & Development Authority (BARDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in infectious disease and public health countermeasures. She also is an Adjunct Professor at Rocky Vista University College of Medicine in southern UT\, where she teaches Principles of Clinical Medicine and mentors medical and graduate students in pursuing careers in biotechnology\, industry\, academia\, and public service. As part of her passion and expertise in overall wellness and resilience\, she is a certified Personal Trainer focusing on the over 50-year-old and cancer survivor populations. DESCRIPTION:The Voyager Lecture Series are evenings to inspire curiosity and wonder. Now in our sixth season\, we’ve expanded our wildly popular series to include new guest speakers who will entertain us with thoughtful and exciting stories ranging from the mysteries of pre-recorded history to mysteries of the cosmos. \nThe James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope which conducts infrared astronomy. As the largest optical telescope in space\, its high resolution and sensitivity allow it to view objects too old\, distant\, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This will enable investigations across many fields of astronomy and cosmology\, such as observation of the first stars\, the formation of the first galaxies\, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets. \nThe James Webb Space Telescope was launched on 25 December 2021 on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou\, French Guiana\, and arrived at the Sun in January 2022. Researchers are hoping HeridiGene Research uncovers new understanding about who’s at risk for what conditions\, which medications may work in some patients and not others\, and contribute to a greater understanding in overall human biology. What is HerediGene? HerediGene Study is a research study mapping the genomes of hundreds of thousands of patients and participants across the intermountain west. Anyone can enroll by consenting at HerediGene.org and donating a small amount of blood at an Intermountain Healthcare hospital or clinic. \n  \nDr. Derrick S. Haslem is an oncologist in Saint George\, Utah and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area\, including Intermountain Cedar City Hospital and Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital.
