Baldwin\, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology\, Jena Germany\, and the DI Ranch\, Motoqua\, UT\nTuesday\, May 28\, 2024 // 7:30pm\nOptional Social Hour With Like-Minded Friends\, Light Snacks And Beverages @ 6:30pm\nThe Lorraine Boccardo Theater\nHave you wondered why plants produce so many of the drugs that humans use and abuse (nicotine\, cocaine\, opium\, THC\, aspirin\, etc.)? \nThese “why” questions have been addressed in studies that lack scientific rigor\, being little more than modern versions of Rudyard Kipling’s “just-so-stories” (How leopards got their spots…).   Thanks to the long-term patient funding of the Max Planck Society in Germany\, Ian T. Baldwin and his students have developed a fire-chasing native tobacco plant\, Nicotiana attenuata\, which grows in Kayenta’s botanical ‘hood\, into a model for the rigorous scientific study of these “drug-related why questions”. For the past three decades\, we have been silencing the genes in this plant that are responsible for the plant’s amazingly diverse chemistry (it makes more than 20\,000 unique compounds) and conducting experiments at the Lytle and DI Ranches in the Beaver Dam wash to provide answers to these “drug-related why questions”. \nThis talk will provide many examples of the sophistication with which this plant uses its chemistry to solve ecological problems. The solutions that this plant has evolved matches the creativity of the human imagination. These science-grounded examples of the creativity of natural selection underscore why nature preserves\, such as those at the Lytle and DI Ranches\, are invaluable laboratories for the study of gene function. \nTickets $20

Join us as we navigate the intersection of finance and environmental stewardship to secure a more water-secure future for all. \nJennifer (Jenny) Coombs is the Director of Client Success at Ethos ESG: a values-based and impact investing data and analytics software that is part of ACA Group’s ESG advisory team. She continues to serve as an adjunct professor at The College for Financial Planning (CFFP) where in 2018 she developed the Chartered SRI Counselor™ (CSRIC™) designation program in partnership with The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF)\, as the first professional financial designation education program in the United States exclusively devoted to sustainable investing. \nIn 2023\, she was named one of Investment News’ 40 Under 40 honorees for her work in teaching financial advisors fundamentals in sustainable investing\, was named CFFP’s 2022 Faculty of the Year\, and was a finalist for the 2019 SRI Service Award – one of the most prestigious awards in the sustainable investing space. She has given two TED talks on the topic of sustainable and responsible investing: “Investing for a Better World: Using Wall Street to Implement Social Change” (November 2015 at TEDx Jersey City)\, and “Stopping the Rebuttal: Millennial Investors and the Future of Sustainability” (April 2018 at TEDx Clarkson University). Join us on April 6\, 2024 for our first ever Kayenta Color Run 5K! \nParticipants of all ages and abilities can run-walk-stroll through 3.1 miles of our beautiful Kayenta landscape. Each color stop during the race will feature powdered paint stations to allow each participant to end the race a colorful masterpiece! The fun doesn’t stop at the finish line\, make sure to join us for a fabulous DANCE PARTY after the race! \nEach participant will receive a race t-shirt and a swag bag filled with surprises! \nPacket Pick-Up will be held at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta on Friday\, April 5 10:00am – 8:00pm. \nJoin us for our First Friday Kayenta Celebration! The Committee invites established and emerging regional artists to submit their original artwork that responds to the exhibition’s theme. \n \nThe exhibitions are free and open to the public during the Center’s business hours as well as during performances and special events. \n \nImpressions on Paper is open to printmaking only. \n \nABOUT THE THEME:  \n \nWelcome to our first Kayenta Printmaking exhibit! DESCRIPTION:LECTURES & IDEAS\nVoyager Lecture Series\nThe Hidden World Beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet\nPresentation by John Priscu\nTuesday\, March 26\, 2024 // 7:30pm\nOptional Social Hour With Like-Minded Friends\, Light Snacks And Beverages @ 6:30pm\nThe Lorraine Boccardo Theater\nDiscover the secrets that lie beneath the largest block of ice on Earth that covers more than 5.4\nmillion square miles and contains over 68% of all the freshwater on our planet. \nJohn Priscu is a Regents Professor Emeritus of Ecology and senior scientist with Polar Oceans\nResearch Group. He has spent 40 field seasons in Antarctica conducting research on life under\nice-shelves\, the Southern Ocean\, sea ice\, permanently ice-covered lakes\, life beneath the two-\nmile-thick Antarctic ice sheet\, and climate change. His work also focuses on Himalayan glaciers\nand the study of life on icy worlds beyond Earth putting him in Tibet\, Alaska\, and Greenland as\nan investigator on various Chinese and NASA projects. He chaired the Scientific Committee on\nAntarctic Research international subglacial group of experts and led the first winter expeditions\nto study ecosystems in the Transantarctic Mountains during the polar night. \nProfessor Priscu is a Fellow of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography\,\nAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science\, and the American Geophysical Union\, is\na German Humboldt Scholar\, and has received numerous awards for his research\, including the\nGoldwaithe Medal in Glaciology for his work on polar ice sheets\, the International Medal for\nScientific Excellence from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research\, and the E.O. Wilson\nBiodiversity Award for his work on polar microbial diversity. An Antarctic stream and valley\, and\ntwo cold-loving microorganisms have been named after him. Priscu has published more than\n300 scholarly articles on his research\, edited four books\, and is the featured scientist on the\nrecent award-winning documentary “The Lake at the Bottom of the World” available on Prime\,\nAppleTV and other media outlets. \nTickets $20 \n

The hour-long concert is performed in two parts\, Byoul (별): “star\,” a solo performance by the Choreographer herself\, and Norri (놀이): “play’\, a four part ensemble work. \nIn her dances\, DaEun Jung connects different times and spaces together across cultures and geographies. Her work has redefined the principle\, form\, structure\, and function of Korean classical and folk dance in multicultural settings. DaEun studied at UCLA where she received her MFA in choreography and the Westfield Emerging Artist Award. Previously\, she performed in Asia and Europe as a dancer of Gyeonggi Provincial Dance Company\, a dance organization renowned for its traditional and contemporary Korean dance repertoire\, and also performed as a main actress in Tokebi Storm\, a rhythmic physical theater group\, presenting Korean-style drumming and dance in more than 1\,000 shows to worldwide audiences. \n  \nTickets $35
