DESCRIPTION:VISUAL ART\nJeremy Salazar: Three Feather Studios\nFriday\, July 12 through Sunday\, August 25\, 2024\nJudy & Tim Terrell Main Lobby\nWe are proud to host exceptional guest artists for pop-up solo exhibitions in the Judy & Tim Terrell Lobby at the Center for the Arts. All artwork on display is available for sale\, directly benefitting the artist with a small percentage supporting Kayenta Arts Foundation. \nOur Lobby is open Monday through Saturday\, 10am-6pm\, plus one hour before all evening events. \nNative American artist Jeremy Salazar is a contemporary painter based in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. \nHe specializes in vibrant acrylic portraitures with a combination of abstraction and realism. “What I try to emphasize in my work are the eyes and facial expressions of my characters\, making these more realistic and full of depth while the rest of the composition fades away into abstract colors. The color schemes sets the mood while the face gives life to the painting.” \nHaving been born and raised on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico\, Jeremy has never received any formal art training and is consequently a self-taught artist. Yet his humble upbringing on the reservation has helped shape his artistic paradigm and purpose for art. “I grew up without running water and electricity—old dirt roads\, sagebrush\, out in the middle of nowhere. Although a meager upbringing\, it was in retrospect\, an open canvas for me as a young kid. It is a passion for me to help represent the authentic native arts as an authentic native artist. We as native peoples know our own stories best\, the ones who lived it\, the story tellers.” \nUsing a bold and vibrant color palette in every painting\, Jeremy has come on scene as a promising emerging artist. With the stage as her medium she works with a unique style of playwriting that she’s been developing called Code-Flow along with traditional elements such as a Djembe music and dance to help facilitate the movement of the play. \nSarahjeen’s inaugural work to debut her Code-Flow style\, Sister\, Braid My Hair\, has received recognition and awards such as the Audience Choice Award for Best Ensemble in the 2022 Atlanta \nFringe Festival and the awards for Best Production and Best Direction in the 2023 SheLA Theater Arts Festival. \nShe creates in celebration of Black femme personification and all of its complexities. Drama heightens and hilarity ensues when small town theater politics get in the way and gossip spreads. \nAbout the Playwright:\nMatthew Ivan Bennett has been a resident of Plan-B Theatre since 2007\, where he’s premiered several plays\, including RADIO HOUR EPISODE 17: SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE FINAL PROBLEM (2023) and the forthcoming JUST ADD WATER (written with Elaine Jarvik) for the fall of 2025. His play ERIC(A) won Best Drama at United Solo Theatre Festival in New York. His feature film THE WHOLE LOT (directed by Connor Rickman) was an Official Selection at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival and the New York City International Reel Film Festival (2022-23). Locally\, he’s collaborated with Pioneer Theatre\, Utah Shakespeare\, SLAC\, Pygmalion\, and Sackerson. His short plays recently appeared with Pacific Play Co. in Seattle. His poetry has been published with Sugar House Review and Western Humanities. Drama heightens and hilarity ensues when small town theater politics get in the way and gossip spreads. \nAbout the Playwright:\nMatthew Ivan Bennett has been a resident of Plan-B Theatre since 2007\, where he’s premiered several plays\, including RADIO HOUR EPISODE 17: SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE FINAL PROBLEM (2023) and the forthcoming JUST ADD WATER (written with Elaine Jarvik) for the fall of 2025. His play ERIC(A) won Best Drama at United Solo Theatre Festival in New York. His feature film THE WHOLE LOT (directed by Connor Rickman) was an Official Selection at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival and the New York City International Reel Film Festival (2022-23). Locally\, he’s collaborated with Pioneer Theatre\, Utah Shakespeare\, SLAC\, Pygmalion\, and Sackerson. His short plays recently appeared with Pacific Play Co. in Seattle. His poetry has been published with Sugar House Review and Western Humanities. After a lifetime doing theatre primarily as an actor and director\, about twenty years ago she turned to playwriting. Since then\, she has had a number of full-length plays produced by various theatres in Utah\, as well as a number of shorter plays. Most recently\, in February 2024\, her play Balthazar (a modern riff on Shakespeare’s Portia) was produced by Plan-B Theatre in Salt Lake City. She has been invited three times to workshop her plays at the Utah Shakespeare Festival (the only playwright to have been so honored): Nemo 1934 in 2006 (later produced as The End of the Horizon by Plan-B Theatre in 2008 and by Man of Two Worlds Productions at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta in 2021); One Big Union in 2016; and Balthazar in 2022. In 2010\, she won a national playwriting contest\, the Fratti-Newman New Political Play Contest in New York City\, for her play The Third Crossing. Her play for children K-3\, Alli and #3\, toured the state in the 2021-2022 school year with a grant from the NEA and was seen by more than 15\,000 students in person or virtually. Last year her play Postcards from Mecca (written in collaboration with Teresa Sanderson) was workshopped in the inaugural New Play Lab at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta. DESCRIPTION:DANCE\nStories from Home by Yvonne Montoya | Safos Dance Theatre Stories from Home\nSaturday\, September 21\, 7:30pm\nThe Lorraine Boccardo Theater\nStories From Home is a series of dances embodying the oral traditions of Nuevomexicano\, Chicano\, and Mexican American communities in the American Southwest. Choreographer Yvonne Montoya\, a 23rd-generation Nuevomexicana\, and an all-Mexican American cast of dancers draw upon personal histories and ancestral knowledge\, including stories from Montoya’s great-grandmother\, grandmother\, great-aunts\, and father. With palpable theatricality\, moving spoken word\, a movement aesthetic informed by vibrant ancestral and contemporary sources\, and universal themes of love\, family\, and home\, Stories from Home brings largely underrepresented Southwest Latino American experiences and histories to the stage. \nWhile Stories from Home is a vessel for personal and specific tales\, the performance also offers a broader look at a variety of Southwest cultural traditions and accounts not often found in American history books. The work addresses historical themes such as the Mexican farm labor Bracero Program\, the creation of the Atomic Bomb in Northern New Mexico and illness related to these US Government projects\, loss of language due to 1940s Americanization programs\, and the experience of the Sephardim people during and after the Spanish Inquisition. \nYvonne Montoya \nArtistic Director & Choreographer \nYvonne Montoya is a mother\, dancemaker\, bi-national artist\, thought leader\, writer\, speaker\, and the founding director of Safos Dance Theatre. Based in Tucson\, Arizona and originally from Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, her work is grounded in and inspired by the landscapes\, languages\, cultures\, and aesthetics of the U.S. Southwest. \nMontoya is a process-based dancemaker who creates low-tech\, site-specific and site-adaptive pieces for nontraditional dance spaces. Though most well-known in the U.S. Southwest\, her choreography has been staged across the United States and in Guatemala\, and her dance films screened\, at Queens University of Charlotte\, North Carolina and the University of Exeter (U.K.) Under her direction\, Safos Dance Theatre won the Tucson Pima Arts Council’s Lumie Award for Emerging Organization in 2015. She is currently working on Stories from Home\, a series of dances based on her family’s oral histories. \nFrom 2017-2018 Montoya was a Post-Graduate Fellow in Dance at Arizona State University\, where she founded and organized the five year dance advocacy project Dance in the Desert: A Gathering of Latinx Dancemakers from 2017-2022. From 2019-2020\, Montoya was a Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow\, and a member of the 2019-2020 Dance/USA Fellowships to Artists pilot program. She was also a 2021-2022 Southwest Folk Alliance Plain View Fellow. Montoya was a recipient of the 2019 National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) POD grant\, the 2020 MAP Fund Award\, and the first Arizona-based artist to receive the 2020 New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) National Dance Project Production Grant.  Montoya won the Arizona Creative Excellence Award at the 2021 Arizona Drive-In Dance Film Festival. In 2022\, her company Safos Dance Theatre received the National Performance Network Creation Fund Grant and the National Endowment for the Arts Grants for Arts Project Grant for her piece “Stories from Home.” Yvonne was also recently featured in KQED’s If Cities Could Dance. \nTickets $35\n \nThe presentation of Stories From Home was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project\, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.

Dr. Johnson’s research is broadly based in sedimentary basin analysis\, including contributions to understanding the tectonic evolution of Asia\, global perspectives on basin and energy systems modeling\, and subsurface reservoir characterization and prediction. More recent work has centered on anthropogenic sedimentary systems such as Lake Powell reservoir sediment and deltas\, as well as energy transitions including carbon management and sedimentary geothermal resources. \nDr. Johnson is a Geological Society of America Fellow\, and the 2021 recipient of the Dickinson Medal from the Society for Sedimentary Geology. She has advised ~30 graduate and undergraduate student researchers and postdoctoral research associates during her career so far. Inspired by the 1977 NASA Voyager mission\, which launched a vinyl recording of natural sounds found on Earth into space\, as well as the uncertainty and isolations in our world today\, this experimental performance begs the question: if we were to send another message into the  distant future\, what message would we send? \nPart vinyl recording and part live performance\, Utopian Hotline uses real voicemails left on a public hotline and to create a moment of community\, while inviting audience members around a communal table to re-imagine our shared future. \nWhat You’ll Experience: \n– This is a non-narrative performance installation\, which is experienced entirely on headphones. Think of it as a puzzle and the missing piece is you.  The headphones act as a tether\, connecting you to the performers. \n– This is an immersive installation. You will be invited to remove your shoes upon entrance to the exhibit and choose a spot to sit on a comfortable pink carpet. We are happy to support any additional accessibility needs. \n– Each performance is approximately 45min in duration with multiple performances occurring on each day (please see the schedule for exact timings). \n– There is no intermission. \nAbout Theater Mitu: \nDriven by a commitment to innovation\, Theater Mitu expands the definition of theater through methodical experimentation with its form. \nFounded in 1997\, Theater Mitu has earned a wide reputation as an adventuresome and dynamic ensemble of artists. Under the leadership of Founding Artistic Director Rubén Polendo\, the Company is committed to challenging the parameters of theater research and practice. Theater Mitu’s work is situated in the tension between acting and performance\, theatrical design and installation\, multimedia and interactive technology. Their practice investigates trans-global performance; interdisciplinary collaborative models; the performativity of non-violence; the geopolitics of objects; contemporary mythology; artist training\, ritual and the sacred. Its considerable body of work has taken on a variety of forms: developmental and production work with some of the world’s leading theatrical innovators\, research and pedagogical work with renowned universities and conservatories\, engagement with non-theatrical communities\, and international trainings and research initiatives with leaders in the field.

Not only do festival goers enjoy spectacular art\, they are also treated to stunning desert vistas\, culinary delights from festival vendors\, a beer and wine garden\, live music\, and Kayenta’s own delicious Xetava Café and The Rusted Cactus. \nGuests will have the opportunity to visit a collection of over 50 juried regional and national artists who specialize in sculpture\, painting\, jewelry\, ceramics\, wood\, metal\, and other media. “The quality of art and extent of creative expression at the Festival is extraordinary. Combined with the Art Village setting and backdrop of the Ivins red mountain\, it is truly a special experience\,” states Kayenta Arts Foundation Chair\, Rob Goodman. \nThe Art in Kayenta Festival hosts a silent auction featuring original work from the attending artists and offerings from local businesses. Festival guests will have the exclusive opportunity to bid on selected art pieces.
