SUMMARY:Art Opening: Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Desert
DESCRIPTION:VISUAL ART \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, May 3\, 2023\, 6:30pm-8:00pm \nFREE \nJudy & Tim Terrell Lobby  \n  \nHaven’t we all been someplace and wished our friends were also there to see and share the experience? This exhibition provides photographers with the opportunity to share their favorite desert photo “postcard.”  \n  \nThe Desert Spirit Art Committee organizes three juried visual art exhibitions each season at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta. Established and emerging artists are invited to submit original artwork that responds to each exhibition’s theme. Exhibitions are free and open to the public during the Center’s business hours as well as during performances and special events.  \n  \nKayenta Arts Foundation believes art in all forms enhances our lives\, nurtures our spirits\, and builds community bonds. The Desert Spirit Art Exhibits in the Center for the Arts at Kayenta enliven the community spaces in the Center\, promote local artists\, and broaden our support from the wider community in Southern Utah.  \n  \nDesert Spirit Art Exhibits are organized by Bonnie Head\, Kathy Johnson\, Sunny Mavor\, Ginny Northcot\, and Roni Thomas.

SUMMARY:Delbert Anderson & D'DAT Trio
DESCRIPTION:D’DAT Trio is led by Navajo(Diné) Jazz Trumpeter and Composer\, Delbert Anderson. He is both a leader and innovator in today’s contemporary Jazz scene and a Diné culture bearer. His work brings forth traditional Diné songs once sung in Diné social circles called “spinning songs\,” and captures their voice in the language of jazz and funk. \nThrough the support of visionary multi-cultural Jazz fusion drummers and bassists\, Anderson builds safe havens for Diné melodies to converse with various styles and pathways for expression. In all their forms\, compositions are guided by the time-immemorial Diné principles of Hózhó-harmony\, beauty and balance with self\, other and nature and Ké or kinship. In this way\, Anderson connects across genre and culture\, all the while\, remaining steadfast in a signature sound that is as strong as the centuries of traditions it was built upon. \n“By mining traditional Navajo “spinning songs” of love\, healing and courtship\, and marrying them to jazz and funk lines\, Anderson and his trio have taken a place at the forefront of a vibrant Native American jazz scene.” – Michael Powell\, New York Times. \nIn connection with their work as performers\, D’DAT Trio extends their desire to create cross-cultural safe spaces through outreach\, education and wellness workshops that encourage personal expression and community cohesion. \nD’DAT Trio is represented by Indigenous Performance Productions\, a nonprofit company. \nPurchase Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Voyager Lecture Series: James Webb Space Telescope
DESCRIPTION:The Voyager Lecture Series are evenings to inspire curiosity and wonder. Now in our sixth season\, we’ve expanded our wildly popular series to include new guest speakers who will entertain us with thoughtful and exciting stories ranging from the mysteries of pre-recorded history to mysteries of the cosmos. \nThe James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope which conducts infrared astronomy. As the largest optical telescope in space\, its high resolution and sensitivity allow it to view objects too old\, distant\, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This will enable investigations across many fields of astronomy and cosmology\, such as observation of the first stars\, the formation of the first galaxies\, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets. \nThe James Webb Space Telescope was launched on 25 December 2021 on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou\, French Guiana\, and arrived at the Sun in January 2022. The first JWST image was released to the public via a press conference on 11 July 2022. \n  \nPurchase Tickets Here
