MUSIC / OUTDOORS

Join us for a breathtaking instrumental experience in Snow Canyon!

John Luther Adam’s: Crossing Open Ground

Saturday, October 25, 11:00am & 3:00pm | Arrival Times: 10:30am & 2:30pm

White Rocks Amphitheater—Snow Canyon State Park

Set in the stunning backdrop of Snow Canyon’s “White Rocks Amphitheater”, Crossing Open Ground is an outdoor work for winds, brass, and percussion where both the musicians and listening audience members are invited to follow their own journey through the physical and musical landscape—encouraging a sense of place and time experienced together.

Once they arrive at Snow Canyon State Park, audience members will hike the 0.4 miles to the performance site, then experience the powerful communion of live music and nature’s beauty. Throughout the performance, each performer and each listener is free to follow their own individual path through the physical and musical landscape.

Guided by music director Nadia Sirota, choreographer Dimitri Chamblas, and section leaders Doug Perkins (percussion), Laura Cocks (winds), C.J. Camerieri (brass), and Trever Hagen (brass), an ensemble of 36 local musicians in partnership with Utah Tech University, will perform this work by environmental composer John Luther Adams, “one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century” (The New Yorker)

Performance Run Time: between 60 and 80 minutes

Produced by Liquid Music, Crossing Open Ground is commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival and School, and The Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment, and dedicated to Barry Lopez.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • This experience includes a 0.4 mile hike from White Rocks parking lot to the amphitheater. Starting at the trail head, the only way to reach the amphitheater is on-foot. Please arrive 30 minutes ahead of performance time to ensure timely arrival.
  • Transportation by golf carts will be provided from the Gila trail parking lot to the White Rocks trailhead.
  • Friends of Snow Canyon Trail Stewards will be stationed along the trail to assist and direct folks.
  • Due to the location of this project, this is not a physically accessible performance. If you are unable to hike .4 miles to experience this project, please send a note to boxoffice@kayentaarts.com to reserve a space for an accessible performance held on campus at Utah Tech University earlier in the week.
  • This event is designed to allow you space to walk throughout the environment during the performance. No chairs will be provided or permitted. There are plenty of natural bench areas to rest along the rock ledges built into the White Rocks Amphitheater.

The price of your ticket includes entry to Snow Canyon State Park for the duration of the performance. You will receive parking and arrival instructions from our Box Office after purchasing tickets.
