When people in the United States generally think about 1776, they think about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But what else was happening during that same period across the continent?
Come learn more about what was occurring in the North American West. The Domínguez–Escalante expedition left Santa Fe in 1776 to try and find an overland route to California, and that journey brought them here to our own back yard in Southern Utah.
Dr. Charlotte Hansen Terry is an Assistant Professor of U.S. History at Utah State University – Uintah Basin campus. She frequently teaches U.S. history, Utah history, and the history of the American West. Her research focuses on the varied connections between the North American West and Pacific, including the movement of people and ideas and the relationships between religions, empires, and nations in the region. She is excited to be back in Utah and living near the Uintas which she has hiked since childhood.
